Fabrik is thrilled to present Kako Peco’s third exhibition entitled “unrestrained”.

Kako Peco’s exploration of the body’s relationship with movement has been an on going theme in her ouvre. This time “unrestrained” presents 4 works that examine modern dance and traditional ballet. “Stripping ballet of all the superfluousness and to express in movement the essence of life rather than to tell a story through character of situation was Isadora Duncan’s aim. She really was the pioneer of modern dance rebelling against the prevalent artistic conventions of her day which she thought rendered dancing contorted, inexpressive and artificial. This applies to my work where my subjects had to move naturally rather than resist the law of gravity, for movements not corresponding to the basic function and design of the human form were unnatural.”

Emphasizing on strength, power, athletic forms and shapes, this exhibition springs from the undulations of the body’s rhythms sympathetic to the organic style and free form technique the artist is known for.

Born in 1987, Kako Peco graduated from the Hong Kong Art School and finished with a higher diploma in Fine Art in 2008. She has participated in various group shows in Hong Kong including the Daily Preview Exhibition at the White Tube Gallery in 2008. In 2010, her works have been shown at the Fotan Artist Open Studios and the Youth Visual Arts Exhibition at the Hong Kong Central Library. Her works have been chosen to show in the Harumi MOMOSE Exhibition by Gallery Uehara in Tokyo, as well as in “A Moving Exhibition” held at different galleries from Bethnal Green to Battersea in London. In 2011, she launched her first exhibition with Fabrik called ‘999’. In 2012, she mounted a show entitled ‘Free Run’ under the Fabrik8 group.

A solo exhibition of new works by Vito Hung Fai entitled “Variation”.

Born in Hong Kong in 1988, Hung Fai has developed a deep interest in painting since childhood. Experimenting with both Chinese and Western media, he re-interpreted ‘Ink Art’ and developed a unique way of presenting techniques both in paper and canvas. ‘Variation – a plan of restoration’ features a series of work on paper, in which a variation of life was nurtured using water as ‘flesh’ and ink as ‘bones’. Hung Fai examines abstract organisms, to investigate the value embedded deeply in bodies and the possibilities of life. The series works are created based on the concept and language developed by the artist to record changes in life by restoring human form to the most primitive stage. The inspiration comes from penetration of x-rays through folding a surface (Chinese paper) multiple times where a three-dimensional ‘container’ is created. With the sensitive nature of Chinese paper and special techniques, ink injected penetrates, appears, duplicates and accumulates. The unfolded piece reveals chapters of transformation traces – a music score, notating the journey of bodies and the variation of life.

Since 2011, Vito has been awarded the Ting Yen Yung Award at The Art of CUHK and has received the Wucius Wong Modern Ink Painting Award at The Art of CUHK in 2012. His work was selected as one of the finalists of Hong Kong Young Artist Prize in 2012.

Fabrik is pleased to present a joint exhibition by Beverly Fung and Daniel Lau, two young emerging artists from the Fabrik8 group.

The exhibition entitled All in our heads pertains to the fictional and narrative scenes the artists have developed along the years since art school – Beverly Fung’s obese looking character set against a soft pale setting juxtaposed to Daniel Lau’s skeletal mythological creatures.

Despite her modern approach on canvas, Beverly Fung’s work is influenced by traditional Chinese paintings where landscapes and oddly placed objects suggest a previously rendered technique on paper to show the details using ink. The stories, which may appear to be light hearted and innocent, suggest an underlying darker tone. This is evident in one of her paintings where her signature character sits on a landscape surrounded by fictitious trees and playfully picks up one of the animals (sheep) as if to devour it – is in question. Her works seek to understand human psyche, its nature and behavioral impulses faced by the condition of survival.

Daniel Lau’s work on the other hand is inspired by Chinese mythological stories by using important sources to understand visual and biological forms of his subject. He turns to the images originating from chronicles and early Chinese works of narrative history to scientific knowledge of biological systems of existing animals we have today. Although these creatures are fictional, through constructing biological features, they are attributed life. Transparency and layering artistic techniques are used to reinforce the internal and external formation of the creatures. Their existence is a paradox of fantasy and reality. Placed in silence, inanimate imaginary objects, yet possessing an aura of motion and energy.

Beverly Fung graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the Hong Kong Baptist University of Academy of Visual Arts.

Daniel Lau graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, with a major in Fine Arts.

Fabrik is pleased to present The sixth day by Tang Ying Mui, Grace.

Human figures, found objects and her rigorous and spare approach to existential questions of the fragile human condition, environmental experience, memory and the internal and external boundaries built around people are the recurring themes in her art. Known for her use of ordinary materials for construction, she seeks to infuse the undervalued and overlooked, drawing equally from her stance on the consequences of genetic engineering and capitalistic greed. Her self-conscious view in the world invites viewers to share in unexpected moments of transcendence and a visceral immersion of time and memory.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is the artist’s sculptural work that comprise nearly as many plastic wrapped wire forming two human figures with their mouths that extend like indeterminate biomorphic forms on the floor and fruits that hang from the ceiling as if suspended in air offering the viewer multiple vantages. Arranged in the gallery referencing a scene from the book of Genesis, “The sixth day” questions man’s ongoing exploitation of land and resources and his relationship to nature in a mass production age. On the left wall, the artist shows a visual representation of the material she uses entitled “The journey of dot, line and surface.” Using a thin copper line as her medium, the artist has created 3D sculptures on the canvas rather than a conventional two dimensional representation suggesting a slight allusion to Cézanne’s still life. This extends to right side of the gallery in which an assembly of personal objects called “Reconstructing memory” relating to her journey from England to Hong Kong. It includes a soft bunny nighty-holder, the toolbox where she puts tubes of paint for her sculptures and installations, a knapsack to hold her daily things and books, and an old fashioned electric fan. Although these objects are full of personal history, their whiteness and lightness mimic the conditions of our memory, which fades when time goes by. When they are transformed visually, combined with the memory aroused by these objects, the process of making these these works become a reinforcing act of her beliefs.

Tang graduated with a BA Honors, majoring in fine arts from Goldsmiths College and a MSC from the University of Westminster, United Kingdom. Tang lived in London for more than ten years and is currently working as an artist in Hong Kong.

She is currently working on a project called “A call from a prehistoric time”. She uses the four basic elements in living: clothing, food, shelter and mobility, to explore the contemporary living and structures in society in our modern age.

Tang had her first solo exhibition in 2011, titled “Recycle Destinies”. She has also joined numerous group exhibitions, including “Pusan World Open Art Festival” and “The 7th Gongju International Art Festival 2010” in South Korea ; “Macau Direct Flight Destinations Trade and Cultural Expo” in Macau; “The Thirteen Stories of Portable Art” in Shanghai and “WINDOW PROJECT” in Canada. Her works also have been exhibitied in various spaces in Hong Kong, including the West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong Art Centre, JCCAC and Cattle Depot Artist Village.

Fabrik is pleased to present a video presentation of Allan Hsu, entitled <<Breathe>>.

A series of 3 investigative video recordings where the artist immersed himself in three different uncomfortable situations resulting in an agonizing struggle of his senses against a metaphysical existence. In one of the videos, the artist was buried completely in sand, attempting to battle against the forced element (earth) with his body. This exploratory act would seem ambiguous to the audience awaiting for a conclusion or an end.

The work emphasizes the perceptual experience of both the art-making process and the outcome of the video. “My body, especially the organs related to the respiration system, involved in each of the processes as a medium/interface, to originate these scenes with a number of familiar elements, for instance milk, sand and water. My body here, as a perceiver individually, has been through an uncommon experience in the process, while getting another relatively different sensation/feeling from reviewing the outcome video at the same time. It is a work concerning more about intimacy connection and communication with the audience, rather than the concept.”

Born in 1989, Allan Hsu graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts from Hong Kong Baptist University, with a major in Visual Arts.

CAPTURING EVERY MOTION

This work describes the relationship between me and three females: my mother, my wife and my daughter. Three of them are most important people in my life and constitute my inner circle. We perform our relationships through motions. I believe that motions can express and reveal more information than language. Body language are more real and delicate. This work is a series of still images to recreate movement working with the element of time so it slowly captures every motion.

ABSENCE OF COLOR

Firstly, from Black to white is linear color tone. My work is presenting a linear relationship generation by generation. Secondly, between absolutely black and absolutely white are various grey. It is one of most powerful color for me, which are full of possibility. Besides, black and white images are inherently containing the element of historical and memorial.

UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE

It is a very personal and emotional work which I never did before. When my daughter came to this world. I communicated with her not in language but motion. The ability of understanding of body language is inborn. Body language is pure, direct and full of emotions.

Exhibition Dates: June 27, 2012 – July 29, 2012
Exhibition Opening: June 27, 2012, 6:30pm
Venue: Fabrik Contemporary Art
Gallery 12 Art One
Wan Chai, Hong Kong

Fabrik is delighted to present Consanguineous dialog / The dialog between me and her… , an exhibition of new work by Hong Kong artist Canson Lau. The exhibition will feature a video installation in three frames with accompanying photo stills.

In the video presented in a continuous loop of monochromatic black and white, Lau’s narrative describes the relationship between four characters (“me and three females, which are my mother, my wife and my daughter”) through a series of still images to recreate moving motion. “I believe that motions can express and reveal more information than language. Body language is more real and delicate. Having black and white as the two colors that dominate the work relates to the linear relationship from one generation to the next. This inherently contains an element of historical and memorial.”

In one of the frames, Lau moves across with one of the characters (wife), blurring and turning the two moving images into one.
